This two-day training course, delivered virtually via MS Teams, is designed for engineers who use WIMES 4.01 (Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specification 4.01) and who would like to understand the rationale behind the contents of the specification and gain technical knowledge on paints and coatings.
Plant and equipment rely on good quality coatings to provide long-term corrosion protection. Specifications are essential in procurement; they form part of the contractual process and assist with quality assurance. The purpose of WIMES 4.01 is to ensure that coatings applied meet relevant standards and regulations, offer reasonable standards of corrosion protection performance and represent value for money in terms of both initial purchase and subsequent maintenance costs.
Long term corrosion protection is only gained if coatings are applied correctly and are defect free. This course explains the main factors which influence coating quality. It provides an understanding of the importance of surface preparation, application methods and coating inspection. The coatings in WIMES 4.01 were selected for their durability and past track record but what are they and what advantages do they offer? The course also contains real life examples and experiences to highlight the factors required to prevent premature in-service coating failure. Questions are always welcome at any time.
Topics covered include:
- Introduction to WIMES 4.01 – Paint and Polymeric Coatings
- Understanding and specifying operating environments and how this relates to corrosion protection.
- The importance of preparing surfaces for painting and coating including water, solvent chemical and mechanical cleaning processes.
- Preparing critical areas e.g. bolted connections, friction grip surfaces, faying surfaces, edges etc.
- How paints and coatings are applied.
- Understanding paints and polymeric coatings – what are they, why and how they provide long term corrosion protection if applied correctly.
- General guidance on coating selection, including coatings in contact with drinking water and coatings used on water treatment works (WTW) chemical dosing equipment.
- Refurbishment or replacement of coatings on existing equipment.
- Coatings for fluid/service and identification on pipework.
- Inspection and testing of coatings during and after application.
- Are test samples required? How to inspect and test the test samples.
- Tips on avoiding paint and coating premature failure in-service.
